Tickets: £4.50 ---------------------------------------------------------- Lord Arthur Savile's Crime A hilarious retelling of the Oscar Wilde classic story. This brand new show revels in the wit of Wilde, while borrowing (rather cheekily) from Wodehouse, to create a wicked black comedy that positively fizzes with fun. You are invited to join Lord and Lady Arthur Savile in their new home for an evening of ludicrous indulgence: LAUGH as Lord Arthur regales you with his astounding anecdotes! MARVEL at the versatility of his man-servant! GASP as his Lordship reveals dark secrets that will have you squirming in your seat! Do you have the stomach for dinner with Lord Arthur savile? ---------------------------------------------------------- Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime is a black comedy exploring fate, duty, and love. It satirises upper-class morality and is full of wonderfully Wildean logic and sparkling wit. As well as writing some of the most popular plays in British Theatre such as The Importance of Being Earnest and Lady Windermere’s Fan, Oscar Wilde is also famed for his short stories for both children and adults. Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime is Wilde’s best known short story for adults and was originally serialised in the Court And Society Review in 1887. Originally published with the subtitle A Study Of Cheiromancy this was changed to A Study of Duty when an anthology of his short stories was published in 1891. Since then, the story has formed the basis of many adaptations and has been produced all over the world, not only as stage plays but also as radio productions, operas and films. The most notable British television adaptation was performed live as part of the Armchair Theatre series on ITV in 1960 with Terry-Thomas playing Lord Arthur. This latest version received it's world premiere recently in Dublin. Reviews:Wilde said “All the world’s a stage… and the play is badly cast”. Happily, the same can’t be said for this dramatisation of his own short story. The two central characters, Lord Arthur and his butler, relate all the absurd and at times disturbing details of how Lord Arthur came to commit a heinous crime some time ago; in doing so, they adopt a variety of personas, my favourite being the butler as Lady Windemere using his silver tray as a fan. The intimate and spontaneous atmosphere belies the fact that this is a cunningly wrought satire. As with much of Wilde’s work, this doesn’t take itself very seriously, and initially there seems no good reason to do so. However, what is presented as a bit of froth is actually subversive and strange – but by the time you’ve realised this, you’re already complicit. Holly McIndoe - Le Cool – Dublin 13 May 2010
Oscar Wilde’s satirical tale of upper-crust morality is hardly one of his best-loved pieces but this stage version of the short story reminds us that even his minor works are touched by genius. Lord Arthur Savile is a typical Wildean dandy who we first meet at a dinner party heaving with vacuous gentility. Here, Savile is introduced to clairvoyant Septimus Podgers who, for a large fee, agrees to read Savile’s palm; alas, the news is not all that cheering with Podgers predicting that Savile will, sooner or later, commit murder.
